“When my mom passed away after battling pancreatic cancer for almost a year, I had just started college. Thanks to the support from Rutgers I was able to continue studying without working a side job. I think that with all of the effects that cancer has on a family, this scholarship will allow for students to focus on coping with the cancer and school work.”
Marna’s Pals, aka The Marna Pal Memorial Scholarship Fund, was founded in January of 2012 by Elizabeth Diaz and David Pal as a charitable organization that helps students whose families have been affected by cancer. This organization was names in honor of David’s mother, Marna, who passed away from Pancreatic Cancer in 2008, when David was a Freshman at Rutgers. This traumatic experience was only two years after David’s father, Thomas, passed away from cardiac complications. Having gone through a very challenging two years, David was fortunate to receive scholarships from Rutgers towards his education, and because of this assistance, David and Liz wanted to help more students in the same way.
Since 2012, David and Liz, along with their Board of Directors and many volunteers, have been able to grow this idea into reality. We have awarded two scholarships totaling $2500, with plans to award an addition $5000 this May, and started 3 support groups throughout Central NJ. Marna’s Pals has hosted multiple successful fundraisers, and look forward to building on this success in the 2014 calendar year.
